Why do I really need to floss?

by Sherri

I hate to floss! What does it really do for me? Every six months when I see my hygienist, she scolds me for not flossing.

I always resolve to do better next time and for the first couple of weeks I floss like a maniac. Then suddenly I'm 'too tired' and only floss once a week.

Then I stop completely.

I may be more motivated to make it part of my routine if I knew why I really need to floss.

Also...

Is there anything that works as well as dental floss for cleaning between your teeth? Flossing has never been easy for me and I hate how messy and awkward it is to have my hands in my mouth.

Any suggestions?

So, my question is: Why do I really need to floss?

Hi sherri,

The truth is, some people do a great job of keeping their teeth and gums healthy without flossing. Most often they are excellent brushers and are great at cleaning between their teeth with a tooth pick, Waterpik or other dental care product.

If your hygienist is nagging you to floss, maybe you have some areas that need some extra attention:)

Next time, ask her to show you where your gums are not in great shape and for some ideas (other than flossing) to make them healthier.

I'm a big fan of flossing. It's the best way to clean between your teeth and under your gums but I know there are some people who will never fall in love with their floss no matter what.

I prefer to help them find another way.

Here are some great floss alternatives products.

Almost everyone can improve their brushing technique...

If you can't bring yourself to stay consistent with your flossing, try one of these products and see if you can fool your hygienist:) It happens to me all the time....I tell my clients what great flossers they are and they get a big kick out of telling my they don't floss!

Thanks for writing,
~Shelly~
