Which toothpastes are flouride free and tartar control free?

by Rose

My daughter has dermatitis on her chin and I was reading about the condition...it stated that sometimes flouride and tartar control toothpastes are the cause.

I am looking for one with out fluoride or tarter control ingredients.

What toothpaste brand is best?

Hi Rose,

The active ingredient in tarter control Toothpaste is
sodium pyrophosphate. Just find a fluoride free toothpaste and check the ingredients.

Most fluoride free brands tend to have a natural ingredients and are not likely to tarter control ingredients.

There are several fluoride free toothpaste brands. Tom's of Maine, Burt's Bees, Dr Ken's natural are some.

You could try switching to a toothpaste that is not tarter control but still contains fluoride.

Sensitivity to tarter control toothpastes is a lot more common than sensitivity to fluoride...I have never heard of a fluoride allergy.

Because it prevents cavities, fluoride is much more important than tarter control toothpaste for good dental health.

Fluoride helps to strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay. Recent studies have also shown fluoride to be helpful in treating gum diesease.

If you decide to have your daughter use a fluoride free toothpaste, be sure she is drinking water that is fluoridated at the proper level. Most tap water has either naturally occuring fluoride or it is added.

Here is more information on the benefits of fluoride.

And another one about fluoride free toothpaste.

Another way to be sure your daughter gets enough fluoride is to have her use ACT Mouthwash. Mouthwash is less likely to come in contact with her skin and certainly does not have tarter control ingredients.

Act mouthwash comes in a varitey of kid friendly flavors.

Let me know what you decide to do and if the her dermatitis clears up.

Good luck and thanks for writing,
