What is Gingivitis?
some subtle signs of early gingivitis
What is gingivitis? Gingivitis is the inflammation of your gums. There's a lot of talk about gingivitis and inflammation these days. Many products
claim to prevent it, others say they can cure it.
But none that help you with the more difficult task of identifying it.
Seems like something with such an awful sounding name would be obvious.
But sadly it is not.
Many have gingivitis
and don't know it. It is common in both adults and children and usually easy to reverse...once you know it's there.
Pictures of gingivitis
Pictures of gingivitis are easy to find but may be misleading. Most pictures show very severe gingivitis that is generalized (everywhere).
However, most cases of gingivitis are localized (only in a few spots).
Symptoms of gingivitis
It's important to be alert for the symptoms of gingivitis.
The most common symptoms are bleeding, swelling, and redness of the gums.
Since most of us don't look at our gums everyday, gradual changes
can easily go unnoticed, making signs of gingivitis easy to overlook. Even if you do look at your gums, the area that is most likely to have gingivitis--the tongue-side of your molars-- is difficult to see.
How do you know if you have gingivitis symptoms? Rather than recite a list, here are a few questions to help you know:
- Do your gums hurt and bleed when you get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist?
- Do you think every hygienist is too rough? Be honest....I can take it:)
- Do you have swollen and sore gums after flossing?
- Do you ever notice bleeding after brushing your teeth? Does your toothpaste start out white and end up pink?
- After you brush and floss do your teeth pass the tongue test? Feel every surface of every tooth...nice and smooth? or a little fuzzy here and there?
- Do your gums look pink and firm? or puffy and red?
- Do your gums have some texture (stippling) or are they smooth and shiny?
After considering your answers, do you have a nagging feeling that you might have gingivitis?
