The Waterpik flosser formerly called ultradental water jet and made by Teledyne Waterpik is a very popular alternative to flossing.
Some studies claim these oral irrigators work better than the best dental
floss. The skeptic in me has to wonder.... who was doing the flossing?
There are so many variables. I'm not ready to throw my dental floss away but, I love dental irrigators for some situations.
This review is based on my own clinical observations. It's not a scientific study...just my two cents:)
Is Teledyne Waterpik Flosser better than dental floss?
I'm a dental hygienist so I am in love with dental floss. In a perfect world with everyone having perfect flossing technique I would always choose dental
floss over any other dental care product.
But let's face it, flossing is not easy and very few of us have perfect technique.
I didn't have flossing skill or desire until going to dental hygiene school!
- Flossing is messy and can be painful to your gums and hurt your fingers. Good flossing technique takes a lot of practice and patience.
Dental floss has the steepest learning curve of all the dental care products. Flossing instructions from your dental hygienist once or
twice a year may not be enough to perfect your skills and stay motivated.
Are not coordinated enough to floss
- Well, let's just say we all have our strengths...and weaknesses. Flossing takes a lot of fine motor skills. I have
seen some flossing styles that do more harm than good. For those folks, their time would be better spent using some other dental health product.
Have limited hand movement
- Some physical limitations such as arthritis can make flossing impossible.
Have Dental work that is difficult to clean
- Braces, permanent retainers, dental crowns or bridges, and implants are all difficult to floss.
Oral irrigators
are ideal for removing dental plaque or biofilm, food, and even stains from areas that are hard to clean.
Tips for improving your gum health with a Waterpik Flosser
Although the learning curve is much easier and shorter than that of dental floss, it's still important to read follow directions and use correct technique.
Any dental care product is only good when used properly.
Here is a short video demonstration:
She sure is cute but I don't like how she throws her dental floss in the trash...Ouch, that hurts!
