trouble with pockets around back teeth
Shelly, I Continue to have trouble with pockets around back teeth. I have cleanings 3 times/yr and use a SoniCare electric toothbrush.
I Would appreciate any suggestions, including best toothpaste & mouthwash for this problem.
reply by Shelly ~ adminHi there, Pockets can be hard to fix sometimes. If they are too deep, it's impossible to keep the plaque from building up because you can't reach the bottom of the pocket.
The Sonicare electric toothbrush is excellent and should improve the health of your gums. Be sure you are using good
brushing technique and brushing long enough.
Most electric toothbrushes have a two minute timer. Be sure to brush the entire two minutes and give extra attention to the teeth with pockets.
Technique and frequency are more important than toothpaste. Crest Pro Health products have stannous fluoride and is recommended for gum disease.
But again...how and when (at least twice a day) you brush are most important. Just be sure to use a toothpaste with the ADA seal.
You didn't mention
floss:) Sooo, maybe you don't want to hear this, but, flossing is still the best way to clean between your teeth. That's where many pockets occur. If you are not flossing, that would help.
If you absolutely hate to floss, there are some good products that can be used as an alternative to dental floss.
Waterpik flosser, Hydrofloss, or Showerfloss are good oral irrigators.
A brand new product called
Sonicare AirFloss is also great and less messy to use.
I recommend
Listerine Mouthwash for improving the health of your gums. Use original formula, full strength twice a day for 30 seconds.
Studies have shown that Listerine really does kill the bacteria that cause gum disease. It tastes terrible but works almost as well as prescription strength mouthwash.
Some pockets require more than additional attention at home. Ask your dentist or hygienist for their
treatment recommendations.
Thank you for writing and
Good Luck,
~Shelly~
