So many toothpaste brands to choose from. Which is the best toothpaste?

There are cavity fighting toothpastes, whitening toothpastes, super whitening, extra whitening, complete, ultimate, sensitive, total...and you still have to pick a flavor...

Should you just buy what's on sale or read all the labels? Help is here. The best toothpaste for you depends on your dental needs. Do you get cavities, have gum disease, a dry mouth, or sensitive teeth?

The Categories

Some toothpaste brands have more fluoride than others. One example is Colgate Prevident, a prescription strength fluoride gel. This is a good product if you have a lot of teeth with cavities. Prevident also helps to decrease tooth sensitivity. It can be used once a day or even a few times a week and doesn't have to be used exclusively.

Sensitive toothpaste Sensodyne toothpaste is helpful if your gums are receded. Receding gums are caused primarily by clenching and grinding. Brushing too hard can also cause receding gum line. If you have a receding gum line, you should use a non abraisive toothpaste. Receding gums treatment includes simple changes that prevent this problem from progressing.

Whitening toothpaste The best whitening toothpaste removes surface stains from your teeth. With less surface stain, your teeth will look whiter. However, whitening toothpaste does not change tooth color. True teeth whitening or teeth bleaching can't be done with toothpaste.

Gum disease toothpaste Stannous fluoride slows the growth of gum disease causing bacteria and gives you cavity protection too. Crest Pro Health Toothpaste has Stannous fluoride and would be a good choice for preventing gum disease.

Colgate Total is one toothpaste brand with the ingredient triclosan and is a good choice for preventing gingivitis.

Kids toothpaste Kids toothpaste makes brushing fun. Fluoride free toothpaste or training toothpaste is good for very young children who like to swallow their toothpaste.
