Tooth Abscess Symptoms

can I get a tooth abscess with a tooth that has a filling?

I have a tooth that had a filling for years then my dentist said it was cracked so she redid it.

A few months later I now have unbearable pain so they checked and the filling was still in place so they gave pain meds.

Then someone told me I might have a tooth abscess I looked it up and I have most of the symptoms is it possible?

Hi Ruqaiyah, Yes it is possible. Trauma to the nerve is one cause of pulpitis. A tooth with an abscess has irreversible pulpitis...meaning, the nerve won't recover without a root canal.

Having a large filling placed traumatizes the nerve of your tooth and can result in the tooth becoming abscessed.

An abscessed tooth needs a root canal.

For severe tooth pain that is not improving, you should see your dentist for a complete evaluation. If the tooth is abscessed, your dentist might prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection and relieve the pressure and swelling before doing a root canal.

You may be wondering why your dentist didn't recommend a root canal when the second filling was placed...

Here's why:

It is difficult for a dentist to tell how a tooth will respond to a large filling because tooth nerves are somewhat unpredictible. Some teeth with large fillings respond well and don't need further treatment, other times they don't.

It can be months or even years after a filling is placed that a nerve becomes abscessed and requires root canal therapy.

Since it is hard to predict how teeth will respond. Most dentists prefer to be conservative and save you the trouble of having a root canal if you don't need it.

Something else to be aware if...

Once a tooth has had a root canal, a crown is often recommended to prevent further problems. Teeth with very large fillings and root canals are more prone to fractures.

After these teeth have a root canal and crown, they look good, feel good, and function like a perfectly healthy tooth.

Here are some other common causes of tooth pain.

I hope you feel better soon:)
