Teeth With Cavities

What happens in a cavity fixing procedure?

Hi Sophie, It really depends on how large the cavity is. Assuming is a small to medium sized cavity that needs a filling, here's how teeth with cavities should be repaired...

Your dentist would get your tooth numb first by placing some fruit or mint flavored topical anesthetic on your tissue to numb the surface followed by an injection of dental anesthetic.

Then the decayed part of the tooth would be removed with a high speed hand piece. A laser could be used in some cases.

After the dentist is sure all the decay is gone. The tooth is prepped or shaped so that a filling will stay in place.

The next step is putting the filling in. Most fillings these days are tooth colored. Tooth colored fillings are made of composite or resin. After they are placed in the tooth a small curing light might be used to make the material harden.

Finally, your dentist will check how your teeth fit together. Your bite should feel the same after the filling is placed. If your bite is high...the new filling is the first thing to hit when you close...it will need to be adjusted until it fits just right.

If the filling extends to contact between two teeth, the dentist will check with a piece of floss to make sure it fits perfectly and feels smooth.

That's all there is to it...

Not too bad really:))

For teeth with cavities that are on the large side, additional steps or procedures might be needed.

Here is an article with more information about cavities and fillings.
