Does teeth whitening make a tooth black if it has a metal filling?

My friend had her teeth whitened and one has turned black which is where she has a metal filling.

Hi Amanda,

Teeth whitening doesn't make teeth turn black.

It's hard to say without seeing your friend. If she wants to know for sure she should see her dentist. But here's one possibility.

Even the best teeth whitening product won't change the color of fillings. It's possible that the whitening of her teeth made her black filling more obvious.

Before her teeth were whitened, the dark filling blended in better...now it stands out!

The best solution is to have the black filling replaced. When there are fillings on the front teeth, it's not unusual for them to need replacing after teeth whitening. They matched the old color and don't match the new whiter color.

If the filling really looks black, there is a good chance that it is old. While all old fillings don't need to be replaced, they all need to be check twice a year by a dentist. Most fillings don't last forever and eventually need to be replaced with a new filling.

Some fillings match the teeth so well, it's hard to see them before whitening. If you are considering whitening, and are not sure if there are fillings in the front of your mouth, ask your dentist or hygienist. They can advise you.
