Past History...

I don't know if this is weird or not, but I hate to go because I have a history of sexual abuse. I'm not sure what it is about the dentist, but having someone stick their fingers in my mouth just freaks me out.

Have I gotten over it? No. I try really hard to go regularly, but the second I need work done, it's a crap shoot whether I'll actually show up.

Recently I went and found out I have 4 cavities (because I neglected going for several years prior!). I wanted the dentist to do them all in one shot, but he refused. I warned him that any snag would probably mean I wouldn't be back. He still insisted. I didn't show up to get the 3rd filled and haven't been back since. That was September. :(

Does sexual abuse lead to dental fear?
by: Shelly

Hi W.L, No that is not weird at all. A dentist or hygienist lays you flat on your back, gets in your personal space, and you can't talk! It's quite a vulnerable position. Considering your history, it's not at all surprising that you don't like it.

I hate hearing that your dentist refused to accomodate your request. Most dentists would be happy to fix all your cavities at one appointment. A lot of dental patients want to get all their treatment done in one visit for a variety of reasons. I have seen a lot more than 4 fillings done in one appointment.

The reason (I'm guessing) for not doing it in one appointment was to save you from having your entire mouth numb at one time. It's not the most comfortable thing to be that numb, but your dentist should explain it to you and let you make the call.

You may want to consider changing dentists to someone who is more accomodating. A good dentist makes their patient's comfort a high priority.

Either way, don't put it off any longer. Make your appointment today! Cavities don't go away...they get bigger and eventually give you a toothache. If you wait too long, you could need a root canal and crown:( Take care of it while it's small and easily treated.
