Toddler and baby toothpaste
Kids toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors, colors and brands. Many of your child's favorite cartoon characters are featured on childrens toothpaste.
Do these products inspire kids to brush their teeth?
Yes, because if your children enjoy brushing...
...they are more likely to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health.
Here are some tips for choosing the right toothpaste for your child:
- ADA seal - Look for the American Dental Association seal of approval.
- Fruit flavor - most kids toothpastes come in fruit or bubble mint flavor. Fruit is the easiest flavor for kids to
use. Even bubble mint is "too spicy" for some kids.
- Non fluoride - Under age 3 should use a training or
non fluoride toothpaste.
Toothpaste tastes good enough to eat.
Until they learn how to spit and not swallow, children should use a fluoride free toothpaste.
- Fluoride - Once they are able to spit, Kids should definately have fluoride in toothpaste. There are many
benefits of fluoride.
- Variety - Variety is the spice of life! Alternate flavors and characters. Kids love new things. Keep them brushing with the latest flavor or
their favorite character.
A few helpful hints...
- Small amount - of toothpaste, a pea size is all an adult needs for brushing. Kids need even less. Just a smear will do.
If their mouth is too full of toothpaste they will not brush long enough.
- Job share - Kids love brushing their own teeth but should be assisted until they are able to color
within the lines. Taking turns will help them learn the proper brushing of teeth.
- Use a timer - Older kids benefit from using a timer. If kids get used to brushing for 2 minutes they will be
ahead of most adults:)
- Use good brushing technique - Kids are more prone to cavities and can even have gingivitis. Kids need to use
good brushing form
to clean every surface of every tooth.
Having their own special toothpaste inspires children to brush early and often. Remember, the best toothpaste is
the one that gets used:)
