Is peroxide safe to use to whiten teeth?

by Carol

I read somewhere that using Peroxide will whiten (bleach) your teeth. Because I drink lots of coffee, my teeth are yellow. Those Crest white strips work, but they make your teeth so sensitive, and after a while, it hurts my gums to even use them (they are also pretty expensive!) The cheaper stuff with those horrible plastic gum pieces you fill with gel are just to nasty!
Is the peroxide safe? I always mix a bit of water with it, but it Does work.

It really works?

Hi Carol, Yes 3% hydrogen peroxide is safe. I'm surprised to hear that it is working for you. Teeth whitening usually requires more contact time than you get with a liquid, that's why most whitening products are gels. Even whitening toothpastes or rinses don't really whiten...they just remove surface stains.

My favorite way to whiten teeth is using custom whitening trays.

They are made to hold the whitening gel on your teeth. The gel seeps out a little at first but after a few minutes you don't taste it at all. Prices vary but they can be quite affordable and effective.

Use hydrogen peroxide in moderation. It can cause gum and irritation if you over do it.
