I Used To Hate Dentist Visits...

I was so terrified at thought of going to the dentist that, no matter what, I would avoid it. It made me physically sick, just the thought!

As child growing up my Mother was diligent, taking myself and two sisters regularly. I went through the whole brace torture and wouldn't have dared complain. My Mother made great sacrifices so I may have good teeth, so, how could I ever complain!

Eventually, I could no longer avoid it, I was in misery and just had to get help.

Off I went and to my surprise met the most amazing Dentist. After explaining my fears, he asked me if I had ever tried the Gas, no I said.

He suggested I try it, explained how it would make me feel and left me to relax with the gas mask on. At first I felt a little weird and had fleeting thoughts of pulling the mask off. I didn't, I just thought, go with it and see what happens.

After what seemed like a moment the Dentist came back, I could hear him talking with me and asking me how I felt.

The next thing I knew he was telling me it was over and I was now just breathing oxygen.

I came round, feeling quite good and totally aware, no grogginess.

I couldn't believe that I'd had an injection and two teeth filled. I didn't suffer at all, in fact, I really enjoyed it. Sounds too good to be true, but it is my experience.

The icing on the cake was that, he also put head phones on me when he started doing the work, I was listening to relaxing music, so, I heard nothing but the music. I feel this made a huge difference for me.

I will now never have any dental work done without first being given the gas and, being allowed a few minutes to relax into it. In fact, I insist on having the gas before they administer any injection.

I couldn't recommend the gas and music highly enough, especially to anyone with a fear of dental treatment.

I hope my experience can help others to have more pleasant Dentist visits.

Cheers,
Lou-ann

Yes, laughing gas is a good thing!
by: Shelly

Hi Lou-ann, Thanks for your story! It's a good reminder for people to be aware of options that are available to make dental procedures more tolerable.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas doesn't really make you laugh, it just relaxes you. Most people say they are awake and aware of what is happening, but they are not afraid. It sounds like nitrous oxide gas has a more profound effect on you.

Here are some other options for anxiety free dental appointments.

I love ipods and headphones. One of my recent clients was cringing at all the dental noise. Between the suction and ultrasonic scaler, I have to admit it was pretty loud. He immediately relaxed after cranking up the tunes.

I'm glad to hear that you found the secret to anxiety free dentistry!

I'm sure someone will benefit from your advice.

Thanks so much,
Shelly
