How can I stop clenching my teeth?

by Heather

I use to chew a lot of gum and noticed that my jaw muscles were really tight. I found myself clenching my teeth a lot and I am looking for a way to relax my jaw. Do you have any ideas?

Hi Heather,

Chewing gum constantly can overstress your jaw muscles. If you havn't done so already quit chewing gum or just chew it for a few minutes. When you notice that you are clenching your teeth, do something to distract yourself from that habit. Try sugarless mints or holding a toothpick between your teeth.

Since your jaw feels tight, it's likely that you are clenching your teeth in your sleep as well. the best way to stop and give your jaw muscles some rest is to wear a teeth grinding guard.

Here is an article on this site with some helpful advise on teeth grinding guards: teeth grinding guard, do you need one?.

And another article on clenching teeth..

Clenching is a hard habit to break but considering the damage it causes, worth your effort to quit.

That's my 2 cents....I would love to hear some suggestions from anyone who has been able to stop clenching. How did you do it?
