Dental Scaling Question

Why am I paying for full quad scaling and the hygenist not brushing, flossing and polishing teeth like my hygenist who retired?

Should I ask?

Will I actually need full mouth surgery or with proper hygiene can I reduce the 3, 4 pocket depth without and only have surgery on the back teeth in spots.

Also , the back is always bad because no mattter what I do , I cannot floss back there - my teeth are very close together, my dentist just told me to order a water pik that attaches to the shower head - years ago after my 2nd surgery, I purchased a water pik and neither myself or my husband could use it without making a mess and gave it away - what makes this one different and will it be easier for me to use than trying to floss??

Dental Scaling and more...

Hi Sandi, Thanks for your questions. Quad scaling is short for quadrant scaling. A quadrant is one fourth of your mouth. Full quad scaling would be all four quadrants.

Most hygienists don't polish after a quadrant scaling like they do after a regular cleaning. It's not the same procedure and honestly there isn't much reason to polish after a quadrant scaling. If your hygienist uses a cavitron and hand instruments...there shouldn't be any stain or plaque left to clean off your teeth!

But, if you like having your teeth polished, I'm sure your hygienist wouldn't mind. Just ask.

Your dentist and dental hygienist can give you advice on whether your pockets can be reversed or surgery will be required. Deeper pockets 6's and above are more difficult to reverse...but not impossible. Your hygienist will re-evaluate your gum health after your quadrant scaling and let you know if further treatment is needed.

How you take care of your teeth after your quadrant scaling is important. It's great that you are looking into all options:)

I'm a big fan of flossing but it's not for everyone and there are certainly other ways to improve your gums. I have seen my clients have good results with electric toothbrushes, waterpiks, and even toothpicks can do a lot to keep your gums healthy.

I had never heard of the Showerfloss until a reader wrote to this site about it. It seems like a good idea and would definately cut down on the mess!
