Dental Implant Dentist

Dental implant procedure

A dental implant dentist specializes in dental implant placement. Since a dental implant procedure is surgical, oral surgeons and periodontists have traditionally been the ones to place the implant and general dentists have been in charge of the second phase...placing the crown.

These days more and more general dentists are becoming certified to place implants and are able to do the entire procedure.

dental implant procedure Who is the best person for this job? To best answer that question, lets take a look at the skill sets of each practitioner.

  • Periodontist
  • A periodontist is a dental specialist who's focus is on the gum, bone, and tissue that connects the bone to the tooth. Periodontists concern themselves with the foundation of a tooth. When a tooth is not solidly held in place, a periodontist is an expert at figuring out why and how to improve the situation.

They look at all factors, make a treatment plan, and design a follow up and home care routine to ensure lasting results.

  • Oral Surgeon
  • An oral surgeon does what you would expect....Surgery! They are experts at working below the surface and comfortable with the most difficult angles. Most oral surgeons also have great sedation options available.

  • General Dentist
  • A general dentist can do a little or a lot. Some dentists limit their practice to fillings and crown. Some do cosmetic work only.

General dentists know about all areas of dental care but may refer you to a specialist when something is beyond their certification or comfort zone.

Periodontists and oral surgeons are very comfortable and skilled at doing surgery. General dentists are also skilled at working in tight spots and with the proper training and experience can be very qualified for dental implants procedures.

So who should do your dental implant surgery?

Any of the above options could be a great choice. If I were shopping for an implant dentist, I would pick one who meets the following criteria:

    denta limplant dentist
  • Good Training
  • Either in dental school or a dental implant certification course.

  • Experience
  • How many have they done and how often? I would choose someone who has at least 1-2 per week for a few years. Find someone who has been doing it long enough to have already learned from a few mistakes but not so long that they're using old techniques.

You never want to be someone's first client....or their last:)

  • Good Results
  • What percentage of their implants fail? I would love to talk to a satisfied client. A reference or two wouldn't hurt.

Sound like a lot of work?

This research can sometimes be accomplished just by talking to your dentist. He or she probably knows an implant specialist and has worked with them for years.

In one conversation with your dentist, you can find answers to all your questions and feel confident about your choice. If you trust your dentist, you can trust his or her referral.

Should you compare prices?

Once you have a few good choices that meet your criteria, you can begin narrowing them down to find low cost dental implants. I would not choose a dental implant dentist based on price alone.
