Dental Health Products
A dental hygienist's guide to old and new dental products
We use dental health products everyday....hopefully twice a day:) New dental products are constantly popping up in stores, on the internet, and at your
dentist's office.
How do you know which ones are best?
In the category of health care products dental items are in high demand. Why? Because of the recently discovered connection
between gum disease and
diabetes, gum disease and heart disease, and gum disease and preterm labor.
We are all looking for the latest weapon to fight gum disease.
Of course a plain old fashioned toothbrush and dental floss will work. But not everyone has the skill, time, or desire to floss.
In fact...most don't.
After 25 years of trying to
convince my clients to floss I'm ready to admit that it's never gonna happen for some.
I've tried...
- Scare tactics:
"did you know gum disease is a risk factor for diabetes?
- Flattery:
"wow you are such a great brusher, think what you could do with a piece of floss..."
- Flashy new flavors:
"wait til you taste my new floss...bubble gum flavor"
No matter what I say or do some of you are just not buying any of it. I'm finally ready to move on a more readily accepted cure for gum disease.
Dental health products for healthier gums
There are plenty to talk about and everyone has their favorite.
- Electric toothbrush
Sonicare and Braun have made some great
electric toothbrushes.
People who use them swear by their effectiveness and I agree. I see
gum disease improve and decay rates drop after switching to an electric toothbrush.
- Hydrofloss and Waterpik
use
oral irrigation
to remove food and bacteria and stimulate gums. These are very good for kids and adults with braces and those who
don't like to floss. Crowns, bridges, and dental implants can always use a little extra cleaning from hydrofloss or
waterpik.
Mouthwash, it's not just a breath freshener
If you are taking the time to use mouthwash, use one that kills bacteria, strengthens enamel, or
provides a dry mouth remedy. Any of them will freshen your breath.
Crest Pro Health has stannous fluoride for fighting gum disease. Because Procter and Gamble is so well respected, I trust and
recommend the Pro Health line of products.
Listerine is not new, but has found new respect from dentist and periodontists. Recent studies have found
Listerine
to be very effective in killing
bacteria that cause gum disease.
I know, it’s what they have always said…now studies prove it.
ACT Mouthwash is great for strengthening enamel and preventing tooth decay.
ACT mouthwash
also helps to decrease tooth sensitivity.
Biotene mouthwash and
Biotene toothpaste
are helpful for the growing number of people have dry mouth.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste is less important than advertisers would have you believe. Unless you have a specific need such as dry mouth, gum disease, sensitive teeth, or get too many cavities, any toothpaste with the ADA seal of approval is fine.
Your good brushing technique is more important. Here is a breakdown of
toothpaste brands.
Thanks for listening to my opinion on dental health products. . . . Now it's your turn:)
What's your favorite dental health product?
When I see a client with extra healthy teeth and gums, I just have to know...how do they do it?
They love it when I say "wow great job, I bet you floss every day... right?"
Wrong. Why do they like it so much when I'm wrong?
Many give all the credit to their electric toothbrush, waterpik, hydrofloss, or a favorite mouthwash.
So tell us, how do your keep YOUR teeth and gums so healthy?
