Dental anesthesia, or lack of it....

by Chanda
(UK)

My horror story starts with dental visits when I was about 10 years of age (a good 30 + years ago)

My teeth would be drilled with no pain relief or dental anesthesia (if it was given, I don't recall and only remember the pain) I had a number of teeth that needed to be attended to and my experiences were pure hell!

Truth be told, I think child birth is a better experience than those horrible excruciating visits.

I will religiously take my children to the dentist but to date will only visit when I am in pain.

I know this is not good for my health and getting more consistent care would prevent toothaches.

I am afraid I am one of those clients who tend to miss their appointments. Any ideas that you can give me would be much appreciated.

Tips for dealing with dental fear
by: Shelly

Hi Chanda,

I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, you are not the only one with such horrible dental memories.

Thank goodness those days are over and dental visits are much more comfortable now. It's hard to forget what happened, but of course waiting until you are in pain is not a good idea.

Here are some tips on how to overcome dental phobia.

You can also try dental sedation. Sedation is very helpful when you have such a traumatic memory.

Here is an article on the options that are available for sleep dentistry.

After a few pain free dental visits the bad memories will hopefully fade away.

Don't give up...your teeth are worth the effort:)
