Cure for Sleep Apnea?
Mandibular Advancement Device vs CPAP
Finding a cure for sleep apnea is not easy.
This sleep disorder causes breathing to stop several times during the night when the tongue and soft palate muscles relax blocking the airway of a person with sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea
treatments include:
- surgery
- CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure device
- sleep apnea dental appliance
If not treated,
Sleep apnea can lead to other serious health issues including: high blood pressure, stroke, heart trouble, diabetes, and depression.
Even children can have sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea in children makes ADHD worse.
One way to treat sleep apnea is a sleep apnea mouthpiece called a mandibular advancement device also known as MAD.
MAD is designed to hold your lower
jaw forward. When your jaw is in this position your airway stays open. Try holding your jaw forward so that your lower teeth are out in front of your
upper teeth. Can you feel your airway open up?
Are you a good candidate for a sleeep apnea dental appliance?
MAD is good for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Having a sleep study will help you determine if you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. There is no easy way to solve this problem and your case may be too severe for a MAD.
But, if you are a good candidate, maybe these pictures will help you decide. Would you rather wear this sleep apnea mouthpiece?:

Or this sleep apnea device?:

Your physician
can help you decide if a MAD is a good option. MAD is also a good alternative if you have difficulty using a CPAP.
Both MAD a CPAP will take some getting used
to, but wearing a MAD has two big advantages: It's smaller and doesn't restrict your movement.
Possible side effects of MAD are dry mouth, and sore teeth or jaws. Side effects are usually mild and tolerable.
Mandibular advancement devices are made by some dentists and orthodontists.
