Can Teeth Whitening Solutions Permanently Hurt Gums or Teeth?

by Stan

Hi Shelly,

My wife recently purchased a teeth whitening solution where she had to wear a mouthpiece filled with the solution for one hour. Within 20 minutes, her mouth was hurting so badly she had to take it out and clean out her mouth. She noticed her gums had been bleached white and were very achy. Can teeth whitening products ever permanently hurt gums and/or teeth?

Anticipating your answer,

Teeth whitening side effects...

Hi Stan, I have never heard of whitening products causing permanent damage to teeth or gums. Minor and temporary tooth and gum sensitivity is common. Some people are extra sensitive and others don't have any sensitivity.

Whitening gel comes in a wide range of strengths. Using a lower concentration and leaving it on for a shorter time will decrease your wife's sensitivity.

She should closely monitor her teeth and gums while using any whitening product and stop as soon as she notices any discomfort. She may also need to take a day or two off between applications.

It's a good idea to wipe the gel off her gums frequently. It doesn't need to be on her gums at all.

One advantage of professional whitening that is done at your dental office is the fact that gums are covered and protected from the whitening gel.

Professional teeth whitening is a good choice for sensitive gums.
