Can I Smoke After My Surgery?

by Anthony
(Whitton)

I recently had an accident and totally knocked out both my front teeth to the root and cut my gums, I have had surgery to put them back in and see if my gums will take them and I have bridges (temporary brace things) on.

I am due for a root canal at the beginning of the new year, I am wondering if I am able to smoke? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Anthony, I'm sorry about your accident.

You should follow your surgeon's advice. Most surgeons ask you not to smoke for a certain time but it could depend on the type of surgery.

Smoking decreases your circulation which slows and impairs the healing process.

The less you smoke, the faster and better your chances of healing will be. I know this is easier said than done:)

Most surgeons give written post op instructions since patients are understandably stressed and nervous before surgery.

Check your paperwork from the procedure, if you can't find any restriction for smoking, call your surgeon's office.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment:)
