Bruxism solutions? How do I prevent teeth grinding?

by Grace
(Carmichael, California)

I have bruxism, which is grinding one's teeth.

I have the habit of grinding my teeth while I'm asleep.

I also have sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, diabetes and two house-bound basset hounds to disrupt my sleep at night.

Needless to say, I'm up and down repeatedly at night and so my sleep is never restful.

What suggestions can you give me to deal with the bruxism?

Thanks,
Grace :)

Cure for Sleep Apnea and Bruxism
by: Shelly

Hi Grace, Wow, you have a lot going on at night!

I have a couple of ideas for you:

There is a sleep apnea mouthpiece called mandibular advancement device or MAD. It is made by some orthodontists or dentists. It opens your airway by holding your lower jaw forward. It's a good cure for sleep apnea in some cases. Here is an article on MADs.

It would be impossible for you to grind your teeth while wearing a MAD. So...it would take care of two of your night time annoyances at once:)

Maybe you already have a solution for your sleep apnea. If so, here is an article on teeth grinding guards. Wearing a guard at night is the best way to be sure you are not grinding your teeth away while you sleep.

Wishing you a restful night...
