The best toothpaste for gum disease is one that is non abrasive and contains one or more ingredients to decrease harmful bacteria that cause gum disease.
Low abrasivity is important because those with gum disease are more likely to have receded gums.
When gums recede, root surfaces are exposed and are more vulnerable to erosion from abrasive toothpaste.
Bacteria fighting ingredients will decrease plaque. With less plaque on your teeth, your gums will stay healthier.
Colgate Total is one that fills both of the above criteria With a relative dentinal abrasively score of 70, it is gentle and non abrasive. Colgate Total also contains triclosan which has antibacterial properties.
Crest ProHealth toothpaste is another possibility, While it has a higher RDA score of 189, it contains stannous fluoride, another bacteria decreasing ingredient.
Because Crest ProHealth is significantly more abrasive, my first choice is Colgate Total.
RDA (Relative dentinal abrasivity) score is one way to compare toothpastes. Every toothpaste has an RDA score. Click here for a list.
It is important to note that the way you brush and how often you brush are far more important than the toothpaste you use. Once you choose a toothpaste, focus on brushing the right way.
Ideally you should brush your teeth for two full minutes. This is difficult with a mouthful of foaming toothpaste.
To benefit from toothpaste ingredients and good brushing technique, try this…
Using the correct amount of toothpaste (about the size of a pea) brush every surface of every tooth. After rinsing, continue brushing giving extra attention to the gum line on both the cheek side and tongue side of your teeth.
Areas that are commonly missed are the tongue side of lower molars, the cheek side of upper molars, and the tongue side of lower front teeth.
Your teeth and gums will be healthier if you brush a few extra minutes after rinsing. This method allows you to benefit from using the best toothpaste for gum disease while giving extra attention to areas that are commonly missed.
