Avoiding the Dental Hygienist

I must admit that I've been avoiding the dental hygienist for awhile now. And I should know better...I had gum surgery many years ago due to a severe plaque problem. I kept up with regular appointments for awhile but I've let it slide now.

The reason? Fear!

You see, after I had gum surgery, my teeth became extra sensitive because the roots are now more exposed. Even the cold water dentists use is a little much for me. I needed freezing (numbing) whenever I had my teeth cleaned...usually I had two or even four appointments just to get my teeth cleaned! That meant four separate needles for the four sections of my mouth. Now I just can't stand the thought of it but know I really have to get it done.

O.K., I feel better now, having told my story!

Hygienist Causing Dental Fear?
by: Shelly

Peggy, Come back.....your hygienist misses you!

Exposed roots are a pain. Not only are they more sensitive but because they are porous...not hard and smooth compared to enamel, they tend to collect plaque, stain, and dental calculus faster.

Using Sensodyne or another toothpaste for sensitivity and fluoride rinse or gel will help to remineralize exposed roots and make them less sensitive.

Another reason to use fluoride......exposed roots are more prone to decay.

The secret to more painless dental hygiene appointments is having your teeth cleaned more often. You will be more comfortable and your gums will stay healthier. It's a win-win!
